MLT Construction Changes Parking

Rider Alert

Effective March 20

Community Transit will close the surface parking on the east side of the Mountlake Terrace Transit Center starting March 20 for an improvement project. Contractors will repair and replace pavement, improve drainage and upgrade underground utilities and light poles.

During the estimated two months of construction, the entire surface lot of the transit center will be fenced off. All cars will need to be parked in the transit center’s five-level parking garage. All bus stops and shelters will remain open during construction and service will not be impacted. Disabled parking is available near the entrance or elevator on every level except the fourth floor. Overheight parking up to 8 feet 2 inches is available on the first floor; clearance on other levels is 6 feet 10 inches.

This resurfacing project is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, part of the 2009 stimulus package granted by the federal government specifically for capital projects only. Less than 10 percent of the project cost comes from local funds.

The Mountlake Terrace Transit Center parking garage has room for 660 vehicles, plenty of space to accommodate those who currently use the surface parking lot as well as those who already use the garage. When all the work is complete, the transit center will have room for nearly 900 vehicles. The transit center was built for transit growth; some of that will come in 2011 when Sound Transit opens its Mountlake Terrace I-5 flyer stop, which is under construction in the freeway median west of the transit center. A pedestrian bridge will connect the parking garage with the flyer stop when it opens next year.

New Light at Mariner Park & Ride

Rider Alert

A new signal at the north entrance of Mariner Park & Ride should make both pedestrian and vehcile access to the lot safer. The light to cross Fourth Avenue was turned on Feb. 17. A new pedestrian crosswalk there connects the transit center with retail businesses on the opposite side of the street.

Pedestrians and drivers are advised to continue to use caution when crossing Fourth Avenue, as drivers are not yet used to stopping at the new light.

The new light is part of an overall safety and improvement project at Mariner Park & Ride that was a joint effort between Snohomish County and Community Transit. The primary source of funding was a Federal Pedestrian Safety Grant in the amount of $663,300.

Remaining elements of the project will be completed by Community Transit this spring:

addition of passenger shelters

relocation of the bike lockers

replacement of bike racks
